Wellness Wednesday: ‘4Kira4Dads’

ATLANTA, Ga. (ATL Live) –

It’s an initiative that’s equipped to help fathers have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to support their partners during pregnancy and childbirth.

Executive Director of 4Kira4Moms, Gabrielle Albert, joins ATL Live to share important details about their mission and an upcoming event, Calm Under Pressure, designed for helping dads navigate high-stress situations like pregnancy and childbirth.

Last month a federal probe into Cedars-Sinai’s treatment of patients of color, particularly in labor and delivery, ended when the hospital reached an agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services.

A planned demonstration by the non-profit “4Kira4Moms” was held outside Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Thursday, demanding the hospital provide safe and equitable maternal care as well as commitment to improving Black maternal health.

ATLANTA, Ga. (ATL Live) –

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has reached an agreement with the government to resolve allegations that it violated federal laws against discrimination when treating pregnant Black, Latina and other patients of color, officials said.

Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights comes two months after the agency told Cedars-Sinai its investigation “raises concerns that a lower standard of care is provided to Black patients compared to their white counterparts.

Approximately 25 protestors demonstrated outside Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Feb. 20 demanding that the hospital – and hospitals across the country – do more to protect pregnant patients, specifically women of color.

The protest was organized by 4 Kira 4 Moms, a nonprofit advocacy group dedicated to improving maternal care. The group was founded by Charles Johnson, whose wife Kira died following childbirth in 2016 at Cedars-Sinai – a death that he said was entirely preventable.

Kira Johnson gave birth at Cedars-Sinai hospital in 2016, but died after waiting hours for treatment for internal bleeding. Her death sparked an investigation from the federal Department Health and Human Services Civil Rights division, which was resolved last month with the hospital agreeing to take specific action to address bias. But her husband Charles Johnson says the agreement doesn’t go far enough.

Dozens of protesters rallied Thursday outside Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to demand that the health system acknowledge “systemic failures” in its maternal care and set up a board to investigate racial disparities, saying that a federal agreement with Cedars-Sinai doesn’t go far enough to protect patients.

“To those inside this building with the power to change this system: We expect you to do better,” said Gabrielle Brown, who coordinates the maternal and infant health program at Black Women for Wellness, an education and advocacy group.

Advocates around the country came together on Jan. 14 at a virtual press conference to call for action on disparities in maternal health care for women of color and pushed to bring to light continued systemic issues in maternal health care

Advocates circled around 4Kira4Moms, a Los Angeles advocacy group centered on improving maternal outcomes for women of color, to call for federal and local governments to address discriminatory practices in maternal health. 4Kira4Moms has its efforts largely centered on Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but pointed to the ubiquity of continued poor maternal health treatment around the country.
